Open Build Service
What it is
Open Build Service (OBS) automates the consistent, reproducible building and distribution of binary packages from source code. It can release packages, updates, add-ons, appliances, and complete distributions for different operating systems and hardware architectures. Each package is built in a fresh jailed environment, and a successful build triggers rebuilds of dependent packages. Documented outputs include RPM, DEB, and Arch packages, with recipe formats including spec, dsc, KIWI, preinstallimage, SimpleImage, and mkosi. Teams can use fine-grained access rights, branching, merge requests, and submission reviews. The OBS API connects clients and services to OBS resources, while the osc command-line client can edit sources and metadata, trigger builds, and gather results. Integrations include GitHub.com and GitLab.com, plus self-hosted GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea when network connectivity works. OBS is GPL-licensed free software that can be installed on users’ hardware or in a data center. Its reference server is available to open-source developers and is used for openSUSE.
For and against
For
- Automates reproducible builds from source code.
- Successful builds trigger dependent-package rebuilds.
- Can run on users’ own hardware or data center.
- Supports branching, merge requests, and submission reviews.
Against
- The beginner guide recommends Linux and command-line knowledge.
- Self-hosting appliance deployment overwrites the target disk.
- The project has no product or service offering of its own.
The verdict
OBS provides a free, GPL-licensed route to building and distributing packages, with collaboration, API, and command-line tools. Users can use the reference server or install it themselves, with self-hosting requiring attention to deployment details.
Who it suits
OBS is intended for packagers, free software projects, and independent software vendors. Its beginner guide recommends basic Linux and command-line knowledge.
