What it is
OMNeT++ is an extensible C++ simulation library and framework, used primarily to build network simulators. Its discrete-event models consist of communicating C++ modules, with structure specified in the NED language. Simulations can run in Qtenv, a graphical runtime environment, or through Cmdenv, a command-line interface. The IDE Analysis Tool uses Pandas and Matplotlib to analyze and plot results; R and Matlab can also process them. Extensions cover real-time simulation, network emulation, database integration, and SystemC integration. The INET model library includes Internet stack models and other protocols and components. Downloads are available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, as well as a core archive and container images. The project recommends opp_env for installation and uses WSL in its recommended Windows route. The Academic Public License is free for noncommercial teaching and research; commercial work requires a separate license, with pricing on request. The project directs users to Discussions, a bug tracker, and Stack Overflow, and says it has no telemetry or account system.
For and against
For
- Builds discrete-event network simulation models
- Includes graphical and command-line runtime interfaces
- Analysis Tool uses Pandas and Matplotlib
- Offers extensions for emulation and real-time simulation
- No telemetry or account system
Against
- Academic Public License excludes commercial use
- Commercial license pricing is available on request
- Recommended Windows installation route uses WSL
The verdict
OMNeT++ provides model-building, simulation, and analysis tools across Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its free license is limited to noncommercial use, so commercial projects need separate licensing.
Who it suits
OMNeT++ suits researchers, educators, and industrial users building network simulation models. Commercial research and other for-profit work require a commercial license.
