Cisco Packet Tracer
San Jose, California, United States
What it is
Cisco Packet Tracer is a desktop tool for practicing networking, IoT, and cybersecurity in a virtual lab without hardware. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Simulation Mode shows how data travels across a network and supports traffic analysis. Physical Mode lets learners practice arranging a device rack and cables. Users can add IoT devices, integrate Python code, and practice network automation skills. Tutored activities may provide hints, though Cisco says these are available for select courses. Learners can enroll in Cisco's free Getting Started with Cisco Packet Tracer course to download the latest version. During installation, the application opens a Cisco Packet Tracer Login window and may direct users to a browser for NetAcad login. Some advanced features, such as multi-user Packet Tracer, require network access. On Ubuntu, Cisco's installation instructions use the command line with elevated privileges. Packet Tracer is free to use, but it is not available for smartphones or tablets.
