ObjectiveFS
Raleigh, North Carolina, United States
What it is
ObjectiveFS is a shared distributed POSIX file system that provides persistent storage across cloud instances, laptops, containers, and office servers. It runs on Linux and macOS, including self-hosted deployments, and connects machines directly to object stores through the S3 API rather than relying on storage clusters or metadata servers. Multiple machines can read and write the same filesystem, with changes visible across them. Supported targets include Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, and other listed providers, as well as Ceph, MinIO, and S3-compatible stores. Data is encrypted locally with a customer-known key and remains encrypted in transit and at rest; cryptographic checksums verify integrity. Automatic and checkpoint snapshots can be mounted read-only. Pricing starts at $99/mo, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. Object-store charges are billed separately. ObjectiveFS does not run natively on Windows, though Linux can export it to Windows through NFS or Samba.
For and against
For
- Shared read and write access across machines
- Connects directly to many object stores
- Encrypted data with cryptographic integrity checks
- Automatic and checkpoint snapshots
- 14-day trial available
Against
- No native Windows support
- Object-store charges are separate
- No free plan; starts at $99/mo
The verdict
ObjectiveFS combines shared filesystem access with direct object-store connections and read-only snapshot mounts. Consider its separate storage-provider charges and lack of native Windows support when assessing fit.
Who it suits
ObjectiveFS suits teams that need shared filesystems across multiple machines and object-store targets. It may fit Linux and macOS environments that need snapshots, encryption, and concurrent access.
