Nutrient DWS Accessibility API

Vienna, Austria

What it is

Nutrient DWS Accessibility API automatically tags PDF files and validates accessibility conformance. Send a PDF to the cloud API and it returns a tagged PDF with PDF/UA metadata, targeting PDF/UA-1 (ISO 14289-1). Its tagging detects H1–H6 headings, ordered and unordered lists, table rows and cells, reading order, annotations, and decorative artifacts. Nutrient reports 96.5% PDF/UA conformance across a 3,157-file validation corpus. The API accepts HTTP requests from any programming language, and quickstarts are available for Java, C#, JavaScript, Python, and PHP. The free plan is free and includes 20 auto-tagged pages and 100 validations per month. Paid plans start at $79 a month, with larger monthly page and validation quotas on higher listed plans. Monthly quotas do not roll over, and requests are blocked after a quota is reached unless the customer moves to a larger plan or uses pay-as-you-go. Auto-tagging reduces manual work but does not guarantee full accessibility compliance, so QA is recommended, especially for legally sensitive or high-stakes documents.

For and against

For

  • Returns tagged PDFs with PDF/UA metadata.
  • Detects headings, lists, tables, and reading order.
  • Free plan includes 20 tagged pages monthly.
  • Quickstarts cover five programming languages.

Against

  • Monthly quotas do not roll over.
  • Requests stop when a quota category is exhausted.
  • Auto-tagging does not guarantee full compliance.

The verdict

The API combines PDF tagging and validation, with a free tier and several monthly quota levels. Its outputs still need review because automated tagging is not a guarantee of full compliance.

Who it suits

It suits developers and organizations that need PDF tagging and accessibility validation through an API. Teams handling legally sensitive or high-stakes documents should plan for QA of the returned files.
