NATS
What it is
NATS is a free, open-source messaging system for building distributed systems across clouds and user-defined edge environments. It supports publish/subscribe, request/reply, queueing, and persistent streaming through JetStream, while key-value and object storage operate in the same system. NATS describes performance of millions of messages per second with sub-millisecond latencies across globally distributed systems. Its server is a single binary with no external dependencies and typically uses less than 20 MB of RAM. Official clients are listed for Go, Rust, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, C, Ruby, Elixir, and a command-line interface, with more than 30 community clients. Connectors and utilities cover Apache Flink, Apache Spark, AWS, Elasticsearch, Fluent Bit, MongoDB, Prometheus, and other tools. Authentication, subject-level authorization, TLS encryption, and isolated accounts support security and multitenancy. Leaf nodes and superclusters support growth in distributed and edge deployments. NATS uses the Apache 2.0 license.
For and against
For
- Free Apache 2.0 open-source license
- Pub/sub, request/reply, streaming, and storage
- Single binary with low typical memory use
- Many official and community client libraries
- Security and multitenancy controls
Against
- Self-hosted deployment requires operational responsibility
- Performance descriptions are project-stated
- Some clients are community-contributed
The verdict
NATS combines several messaging and data patterns in one open-source system. Its small server, broad client support, and distributed deployment options fit teams designing cloud and edge services.
Who it suits
NATS suits teams building dynamic, loosely coupled services across clouds or on low-resource edge devices. It is also suited to developers needing clients, integrations, and configurable delivery guarantees.
