Microsoft Fabric Notebooks
What it is
Microsoft Fabric Notebooks is a web-based coding workspace for Apache Spark jobs and machine-learning experiments. Data engineers and data scientists can import Jupyter .ipynb notebooks and source files in .py, .scala, or .sql. Spark handles CSV, TXT, JSON, Parquet, and Delta Lake data. Multiple lakehouses can be attached, with one pinned as default for local-path reads and writes. The Job Scheduler API supports parameterized runs, session settings, environment and runtime selection, lakehouse selection, monitoring, and cancellation. NotebookUtils provides file operations across ADLS Gen2, Azure Blob Storage, and Lakehouse storage, and can retrieve Azure Key Vault secrets. Users can co-edit, see cursors and output, and comment on cells. Copilot can generate, refactor, summarize, validate, and suggest fixes for notebook code, with approval for changes. Microsoft describes Entra ID authentication, encryption, private links, customer-managed keys, and outbound protection.
For and against
For
- Imports Jupyter and common source files
- Supports multiple lakehouse attachments
- Job Scheduler API supports monitoring and cancellation
- Co-editing includes cursors, output, and comments
- Copilot can suggest code fixes
Against
- Free trial capacity lasts 60 days
- Built-in and environment storage each limited to 500 MB
- Files limited to 100 MB each
The verdict
Fabric Notebooks brings Spark analysis, lakehouse access, automation, collaboration, and Copilot into one web workspace. The free option is a 60-day trial; paid capacity pricing is provided on request or through usage-based options.
Who it suits
It suits data engineers and data scientists working with Spark notebooks, lakehouses, and scheduled jobs in a web or API environment. Collaborative teams may value shared editing and cell comments.
