Meson
What it is
Meson is a free, open-source build system for projects written in C, C++, C#, D, Fortran, Java, and Rust. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, and supports cross compilation for many operating systems and bare-metal targets. Build definitions use a readable domain-specific language that is not Turing complete. Ninja is the default backend; Visual Studio and Xcode backends are available for native IDE integration. Meson also provides a multiplatform dependency provider that works with distribution packages. Its introspection API and JSON descriptions of targets, dependencies, tests, and build options support connections to IDEs and other build tools. Listed integrations include CLion, Eclipse CDT, GNOME Builder, KDevelop, Qt Creator, and a VS Code/Codium extension. Installation options include pip, GitHub release downloads, or a Windows MSI bundling Meson, Ninja, and Python. Meson is implemented in Python 3 and requires Python 3.10 or newer. The default Ninja backend requires the Ninja executable; the Visual Studio and Xcode backends do not.
For and against
For
- Supports seven listed programming languages.
- Cross-compiles for many operating systems and bare metal.
- Offers Visual Studio and Xcode backends.
- Provides IDE integrations and build metadata.
- Free and open source.
Against
- Requires Python 3.10 or newer.
- Default backend requires the Ninja executable.
- Does not support wildcard source lists.
The verdict
Meson combines cross-platform builds, multiple backend choices, and IDE-oriented metadata. Consider its Python requirement and lack of wildcard source lists when deciding whether its build-definition approach fits your project.
Who it suits
Meson suits developers who need a build system across desktop and bare-metal targets, including those seeking native IDE integration. It may also suit teams that want build definitions in a readable, non-Turing-complete language.
