mcwrapper
What it is
mcwrapper is a free Minecraft server wrapper for Linux, macOS and other POSIX-compatible systems. It is intended for server administrators and can start, stop, restart and report a server's status. Administrators can send arbitrary commands through a configurable named pipe called command_input. The backup action pauses world-data writing, copies and compresses the data, then resumes writing. Backups receive timestamps, a latest symlink is created and the default retention is five backups. Restore can stop the server, save current data, replace the world directory with a selected backup and restart the server when needed. Connected clients are disconnected during restoration. The log action follows the server log in real time. Installation is available through RubyGems.org, and the install action downloads the current minecraft_server.jar from Mojang. Configuration can come from environment variables or mcwrapper.conf files in documented locations.
For and against
For
- Start, stop and restart controls
- Timestamped backups with latest symlink
- Real-time log following
- Automated Minecraft server download
- MIT License distribution
Against
- Restore disconnects connected clients
- Default retention is five backups
- Local storage destination
- Provided without warranty
The verdict
mcwrapper focuses on command-line server administration, backup handling and live logging. Its restore process requires interruption, so administrators should plan for disconnected clients.
Who it suits
mcwrapper suits administrators of Minecraft Java servers on Linux, macOS or other POSIX-compatible systems. It is aimed at operators who need server controls, logs and local backups.
