FastBack
What it is
FastBack is a free Minecraft mod for creating incremental snapshots of game worlds, saving changed portions rather than a complete world each time. It can store backups locally, on a Git server, or on a network volume without a Git server. Automatic backups can run when a world shuts down or after Minecraft autosaves. Restoring a snapshot creates a separate copy of the selected world, leaving current world files untouched. Snapshot pruning and retention policies help manage saved versions, and snapshots can include mod JARs and configuration files. FastBack works with Minecraft clients and dedicated servers on Linux, Mac, and Windows. It requires native Git and Git LFS to be installed and available on Minecraft’s process PATH. The project describes it as designed for worlds up to about 5GB, while its FAQ recommends GitHub remotes only for worlds under 500MB because of GitHub size restrictions. Downloads are linked through CurseForge, and the project directs questions and Git installation help to Discord. FastBack is distributed under GNU GPL version 2.
For and against
For
- Backs up locally, to Git servers, or network volumes.
- Can trigger backups on shutdown or autosave.
- Restore creates a copy without changing current world files.
- Supports snapshot pruning and retention policies.
Against
- Requires native Git and Git LFS on the process PATH.
- Designed for worlds up to about 5GB.
- GitHub remotes are recommended only under 500MB.
The verdict
FastBack offers incremental Minecraft world backups across client and dedicated-server environments, with retention controls and copy-based restores. Its Git and Git LFS requirements and stated size guidance are important considerations.
Who it suits
FastBack suits Minecraft players and server operators who want automatic snapshots and a separate-copy restore workflow. It is a better fit for worlds within the project's stated size guidance than for very large worlds.
