MangoHud
What it is
MangoHud is free, MIT-licensed Linux software that overlays monitoring information on Vulkan and OpenGL applications. Configurable metrics include FPS, frame timing, CPU and GPU load, temperatures, clocks, fan speed, power, memory, and network throughput. Users can configure it globally, per application, through environment variables, or with presets. The fps_limit option supports multiple comma-separated frame-rate values. MangoHud logs frame data to files, and its local mangoplot script creates visual comparisons of benchmark logs. Logs can also be batch uploaded to FlightlessMango.com for frametime graphs and summaries; uploaded benchmarks are public. Steam games use the launch option `mangohud %command%`, while Lutris games use `mangohud` as a command prefix. Gamescope requires mangoapp and `gamescope --mangoapp -- %command%`; ordinary MangoHud use with gamescope is unsupported. Installation is available through packages, Flatpak, or source builds with Meson and Ninja. Documentation lists Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Solus, and openSUSE packages.
For and against
For
- Supports Vulkan and OpenGL applications
- Displays configurable performance and hardware metrics
- Logs frame data for later comparison
- Works with Steam and Lutris launch workflows
- MIT-licensed and free
Against
- Linux is the only listed platform
- Gamescope requires companion mangoapp
- Uploaded benchmark logs are public
- Gamescope does not support ordinary MangoHud
The verdict
MangoHud provides a configurable Linux overlay plus local and online benchmark analysis. Its integrations cover common launchers, but Gamescope requires a separate command and companion application.
Who it suits
MangoHud suits Linux users who want on-screen performance and hardware metrics in Vulkan or OpenGL applications. It also fits users recording and comparing benchmark logs.
