Kube-OVN
What it is
Kube-OVN combines OVN and Open vSwitch with Kubernetes to orchestrate cloud-native networks. Its documented networking capabilities include subnet management, static IP allocation, gateways, hybrid underlay and overlay networks, VPC features, QoS, ACLs, and traffic mirroring. VPC networks provide separate address spaces and networking resources for tenants. The project recommends Kube-OVN for Kubernetes environments that need KubeVirt support or multi-tenant networking; KubeVirt virtual machines can live-migrate without network interruption. Documented integrations include Cilium, MetalLB, OpenStack, Submariner, and OVN interconnect. With Cilium chaining, Kube-OVN network abstractions work alongside Cilium eBPF monitoring and security capabilities. The project says it runs on x86_64 and arm64, and its documentation provides one-click installation scripts. It reports production validation with clusters of thousands of nodes and hundreds of thousands of pods. Kube-OVN is free under Apache-2.0, deployed on-premises with a centralized control plane. The project advises against using it with OpenShift, public-cloud managed Kubernetes, or when an all-in-one CNI, ingress, service mesh, and observability stack is needed.
For and against
For
- Supports VPC networks with separate tenant address spaces.
- KubeVirt live migration can avoid network interruption.
- Documented integrations include Cilium and MetalLB.
- Runs on x86_64 and arm64.
- Free under the Apache-2.0 license.
Against
- Project advises against use with OpenShift.
- Project advises against public-cloud managed Kubernetes.
- Not recommended when an all-in-one network stack is required.
The verdict
Kube-OVN offers Kubernetes networking capabilities that include multi-tenancy, policy controls, and integrations with other projects. Its stated exclusions narrow the settings where it is recommended.
Who it suits
Kube-OVN suits Kubernetes environments needing multi-tenant networking or KubeVirt support. It is not recommended for OpenShift, public-cloud managed Kubernetes, or deployments seeking an all-in-one networking and observability stack.
