Knoxite
What it is
Knoxite is free, open-source software for file storage and backup on Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted setups. It creates incremental snapshots, restores them to a chosen location, and can verify stored chunk integrity. Repositories may use multiple backends in parallel, including local filesystems, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Backblaze, Google Cloud Storage, Mega, Nextcloud, ownCloud, SSH or SFTP, FTP, and WebDAV. Chunk-level deduplication stores matching file portions once. Snapshot compression supports flate, gzip, lzma, zlib, and zstd, with no compression as the default. Repository data uses AES encryption with a password supplied during initialization. Multiple backends can be configured for tolerance of backend failures. Snapshots can be mounted read-only; read-write mounting is still work in progress. Installation requires cloning the source repository and building with Go. Documentation warns that losing the repository password blocks data access and that command-line or environment-variable password passing is unsafe. Knoxite is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
For and against
For
- Free AGPL-3.0 open-source software
- Supports many local and cloud backends
- Chunk deduplication reduces repeated stored data
- AES encrypts repository data
- Can verify chunks and restore snapshots
Against
- Installation requires cloning and building with Go
- Losing the repository password prevents data access
- Read-write snapshot mounting is work in progress
- WebDAV testing covers Nextcloud and ownCloud
The verdict
Knoxite offers flexible, encrypted snapshot backups with deduplication, compression, and many backend choices. It requires command-line installation and careful password handling, and some mounting functionality remains unfinished.
Who it suits
Knoxite suits technically comfortable users who want open-source, self-hosted backup with configurable storage backends and encryption.
