IBM SPSS Statistics

IBM SPSS Statistics · Armonk, New York, United States · founded 1911

What it is

IBM SPSS Statistics is desktop software for statistical testing, data preparation, predictive modeling, regression, forecasting, and automated analysis. It supports scripting and offers methods such as mediation analysis, bootstrapping, multivariate time-series analysis, decision trees, neural networks, custom tables, and complex-sample analysis. The AI Output Assistant, powered by watsonx.ai, analyzes selected results and presents plain-language insights. Python and R plug-ins enable those languages within SPSS Statistics. IBM lists subscription, perpetual, campus, and student licenses. The Base subscription costs $99 a month per authorized user and includes Statistics Base, data preparation, and bootstrapping. Three other named subscriptions cost $79 a month: Custom Tables and Advanced Statistics; Forecasting and Decision Trees; and Complex Sampling and Testing. A 14-day trial requires no credit card to create an account. There is no free plan. IBM says desktop software is not supported on Linux, and authorized-user licenses cannot run remotely through multi-session environments.

For and against

For

  • Supports statistical tests and regression models
  • Includes Python and R plug-ins
  • AI assistant summarizes selected results
  • Offers campus and student licenses
  • Provides a 14-day trial

Against

  • No free plan
  • Base subscription costs $99 a month
  • Desktop software is not supported on Linux
  • Authorized-user licenses cannot run through multi-session environments

The verdict

SPSS Statistics offers broad statistical methods, scripting integrations, and several licensing routes. Its paid model, Linux limitation, and remote-session restriction matter when choosing a deployment.

Who it suits

SPSS Statistics suits organizations, researchers, students, and faculty needing structured statistical analysis. IBM names marketing, sales, healthcare, market research, government, and supply-chain use cases.
