Huginn
What it is
Huginn is open-source software for creating agents that automate online tasks by monitoring web pages, watching for events, and taking actions. Agents create and consume events that travel through directed flows. Example uses include checking websites for changes, tracking deals, and sending scheduled email digests. Huginn can send and receive WebHooks, run custom JavaScript functions, and connect to services including Slack, Twitter, RSS, JIRA, MQTT, Twilio, and Pushbullet. Users can add external Agent gems to an installation. The project provides an official Docker image and manual server installation instructions; local installation requires MySQL or PostgreSQL. Its default configuration needs at least 0.5 GB of physical memory and 0.5 GB of addressable memory, such as swap. The production installation guide was created for Debian and Ubuntu. The README assumes deployments use SSL and recommends an egress proxy for shared instances where untrusted users can create agents, to guard against requests reaching internal services. Huginn is available as self-hosted software under the MIT License. A Heroku deployment requires a paid Heroku subscription.
For and against

- Supports scheduled runs and app triggers
- Sends and receives WebHooks
- Custom JavaScript and external Agent gems are supported
- Free self-hosted software under the MIT License
Against
- Local installation requires MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Default setup needs at least 0.5 GB physical memory
- Heroku deployment requires a paid subscription
The verdict
Huginn offers a self-hosted approach to web monitoring and event-based automation, with integrations and extension options. Account for its database and memory requirements, and review the recommended security configuration for shared instances.
Who it suits
Huginn may suit users who want to build and host their own event-driven web automations. It also invites contributions such as new agents, documentation, tutorials, and interface improvements.
