HiPerConTracer
What it is
HiPerConTracer is a free, GPL-licensed framework for Ping and Traceroute measurements on Linux and self-hosted deployments. It supports ICMP and UDP, multi-homing, parallel measurements, and networks that use load balancing. Linux software and hardware timestamping provide nanosecond-precision timing. Its tools cover viewing, merging, converting, syncing, collecting, importing, querying, and managing results; exports include CSV. The importer can store results in MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB. Sync transfers files to a remote collector through Rsync or SSH, while a reverse SSH tunnel lets a collector connect to a node without a publicly reachable IP address. Developers can integrate measurement functions through the shared or static libhipercontracer library. The project describes the framework as intended for large-scale, long-running, high-frequency measurements. It provides installable packages and source downloads, and directs questions and bug reports to its GitHub issue tracker. Ready-made packages are listed for Linux and FreeBSD; users of NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, and GNU Hurd are directed to build from source.
For and against
For
- Supports ICMP and UDP measurements.
- Nanosecond timing uses Linux software and hardware timestamping.
- Results can be imported into four listed database backends.
- Reverse SSH tunnel supports nodes without public IPs.
Against
- Those platforms require building from source.
The verdict
HiPerConTracer combines measurement, data-transfer, and result-management tools for larger or distributed measurement setups. Check platform packaging and database security recommendations before deployment.
Who it suits
It suits teams running distributed, high-frequency Ping and Traceroute measurements on Linux or FreeBSD. Developers can also use its library to integrate measurement functions into other software.
