GripMock
What it is
GripMock is a free, open-source mock server for gRPC services. It serves responses described in YAML or JSON without requiring a backend, making it suitable for local development, CI, and containerized test environments. Requests can be matched by input values and headers with equals, contains, matches, anyOf, glob, and priority rules. It handles unary, server-streaming, client-streaming, and bidirectional calls. Dynamic templates can build replies from request data, headers, and stream position, while stubs can return gRPC errors or delayed responses for timeout scenarios. The dashboard at http://localhost:4771/ lists loaded and matched stubs and permits editing without restarting. GripMock loads .proto files or compiled .pb descriptors, including descriptors pushed to a running server. Installation options include Docker, release binaries, Homebrew, shell scripts, and Go, with an embedded Go SDK. Native TLS, optional mutual TLS, OTLP traces, Prometheus metrics, MCP endpoints, gRPC-Web, and server reflection are supported.
For and against
For
- Free and MIT-licensed
- Supports all major gRPC streaming patterns
- Runtime stub editing through web dashboard
- Dynamic responses and failure simulation
- Native TLS and Prometheus metrics
Against
- Self-hosted deployment model
- Requires configuration of protocol files or descriptors
- Documentation directs support through GitHub issues
The verdict
GripMock brings broad gRPC mocking, matching, streaming, and runtime controls into a self-hosted tool. Its installation choices and embedded Go SDK support varied development and CI setups.
Who it suits
GripMock suits developers and teams building or testing gRPC clients and services. It is also intended for CI, local, and self-hosted environments needing configurable mocks.
