Grafana Cloud Traces
What it is
Grafana Cloud Traces is a managed backend for storing, searching, and querying distributed traces. Powered by Grafana Tempo, it uses object storage and a columnar format based on Apache Parquet. It accepts OpenTelemetry, Zipkin, and Jaeger data, and applications can send spans through Grafana Alloy or the OpenTelemetry Collector. TraceQL lets users select spans and locate spans matching specified conditions. The service can derive request-rate, error-rate, and duration metrics from spans, and Grafana describes linking traces with logs and metrics in its integrated stack. The Free plan includes 50 GB of ingestion per month and 14-day retention, with community support. Paid accounts have a 30-day minimum retention period; extra retention is charged per gigabyte for each additional 30-day increment. Pro includes a $19 per month platform fee covering 50 GB of ingestion, after which usage-based charges apply, and includes 8×5 email support. The stated default maximum trace size is 3,000,000 bytes, and oversized traces can be discarded.
