GoCD
What it is
GoCD is a free, open-source server for continuous delivery and release automation. Its Value Stream Map follows changes from commit to deployment, shows upstream causes and downstream effects, and lets users navigate jobs to find inefficiencies. Pipelines support parallel execution and dependency management, while traceability features compare files and commit messages across builds. Teams can promote a once-built binary between stages, run cross-platform tests in parallel, and use test reports that identify the changeset and platform where a failure began. GoCD supports delivery workflows involving Kubernetes, Docker, AWS and other cloud environments. It can run on Kubernetes with a Helm chart or official Docker images, and dynamically scale Kubernetes agents. Plugins connect external services, with catalog options for Docker Registry, S3 artifacts, Kubernetes agents and secrets managers. GoCD is self-hosted and licensed under Apache License 2.0. Downloads include Windows, macOS and Linux options, as well as Docker and Kubernetes/Helm. A fresh installation does not require authentication, so teams need to configure authentication and access controls as appropriate. GoCD 26.1.0 requires Java 21 or later; community-written plugins may be unmaintained.
For and against
For
- Value Stream Map traces changes through deployment.
- Pipelines support parallel work and dependency management.
- Can promote the same built binary between stages.
- Supports Kubernetes, Docker and AWS workflows.
- Free and licensed under Apache License 2.0.
Against
- Self-hosted deployment requires operating the server.
- A new installation does not require authentication.
- Some community-written plugins may be unmaintained.
- GoCD 26.1.0 requires Java 21 or later.
The verdict
GoCD combines pipeline modeling, change traceability and deployment workflows in a free, self-hosted server. Teams should plan for authentication configuration, Java requirements and care when selecting community-maintained plugins.
Who it suits
GoCD suits teams managing delivery pipelines who want workflow visibility, traceability and deployment automation. It may fit organizations prepared to self-host the server and configure authentication and access controls.
