Fossil
What it is
Fossil is a distributed software configuration management system for tracking software development and project history. It combines version control with project tools including bug tracking, a wiki, forums, chat, email alerts, and technical notes. Its built-in web interface supports ticketing, documentation, timelines, full-text search, histories, diffs, ZIP downloads, and access management. Fossil is available free under a 2-clause BSD license and runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is packaged as a single executable and can be self-hosted as a standalone server or through CGI, SCGI, inetd, or stunnel. Network communication uses HTTPS or SSH, and synchronization supports autosync, enabled by default, as well as manual merges. Repositories are kept in an SQLite database with atomic transactions and consistency checks before commits. The project also supports an automatic GitHub mirror. Fossil began as a tool for the SQLite project and has since been adopted by others. Listed limitations include no file locking, large-file handling, sparse checkout, or nested repositories.
For and against
For
- Combines version control with project management tools
- Built-in web interface includes search and access management
- Runs as a single self-contained executable
- Supports HTTPS or SSH network communication
Against
- No file locking
- No large-file handling
- No sparse checkout or nested repositories
The verdict
Fossil brings repository history and several project tools into one self-hosted system. Its listed limits around large files, sparse checkout, and nested repositories are worth checking against a project's needs.
Who it suits
Fossil suits software teams looking for distributed version control alongside project discussion and tracking tools. It is also suited to users who want to self-host a project repository and web interface.
