Fortio
What it is
Fortio is a free, open-source HTTP and gRPC load-testing project written in Go. It combines a reusable library, command-line tool, echo server, and web UI, with API and self-hosted deployment options across Linux, macOS, Windows, and other documented environments. Runs can target a chosen queries-per-second rate or maximum speed, ending after a duration, a fixed call count, or interruption. Fortio records latency histograms and percentiles such as p99. Its server offers a web UI and REST API for starting tests and viewing latency or comparative result graphs. Additional server functions include request echo, probabilistic latency or error injection, TCP echo and proxy, HTTP fan-out proxy, and gRPC echo and health. Go applications can embed Fortio or use its log, stats, and fhttp components independently. Fortiotel adds OpenTelemetry hooks, while Fortio Proxy can provide HTTPS with automatic certificates and multiplex gRPC and HTTP services through one port. Installation options include Docker, Go install, binaries, Homebrew, and a Windows ZIP.
For and against
For
- Measures latency histograms and p99 percentiles
- Supports HTTP and gRPC testing
- Includes REST API and web UI
- Offers Docker and platform installation options
- Open-source and self-hosted
Against
- Source installation requires Go 1.18 or later
- Project is oriented toward technical users
- Deployment is self-hosted or on-premise
The verdict
Fortio brings load generation, measurement, server utilities, and programmable Go components together in an open-source package. Its command-line, API, and web interfaces give teams several ways to run and inspect tests.
Who it suits
Fortio suits developers and operators who need programmable HTTP or gRPC load generation, latency measurements, and self-hosted tooling. Go developers can also embed its library or individual components.
