Apache JMeter
What it is
Apache JMeter is a free, open-source Java application for load testing functional behavior and measuring performance. It can simulate heavy loads on servers, server groups, networks, or objects. Supported test types include HTTP and HTTPS, SOAP and REST, FTP, JDBC, LDAP, JMS, email protocols, TCP, Java objects, and native commands or shell scripts. Its test IDE can record plans from browsers or native applications, then help users build and debug them. For load testing, JMeter provides command-line execution on Java-compatible operating systems and can generate dynamic HTML reports. It also supports remote testing, pluggable samplers and timers, scripting such as Groovy and BeanShell, and plugins for data analysis and visualization. Third-party open-source libraries provide continuous integration options for Maven, Gradle, and Jenkins. JMeter operates at the protocol level: it does not run JavaScript in HTML pages or render them as a browser does. It requires Java 8 or higher, and its manual recommends command-line mode rather than the GUI for load tests. The project advises isolating untrusted JMX files because opening one may execute code in some cases.
For and against
For
- Supports a wide range of protocols and test types.
- Can record, build, and debug test plans.
- Generates dynamic HTML test reports.
- Supports remote testing and data visualization plugins.
- Available as free, open-source software.
Against
- Requires Java 8 or higher.
- Does not execute JavaScript or render pages like a browser.
- The project recommends command-line mode for load tests.
- Untrusted JMX files may execute code when opened.
The verdict
JMeter provides protocol-level load testing, test authoring, and reporting without a software price. Its Java requirement and lack of browser rendering matter when choosing it for a testing workflow.
Who it suits
JMeter suits users who need to test performance across supported protocols and systems, including through remote testing. It may fit teams that can work with Java and command-line load testing.
