Forge Material Studio
What it is
Forge Material Studio is a local-first web and Windows tool for creating procedural physically based rendering materials. Its node graph combines cloud noise, Voronoi, gradients, bricks, mathematical operations, blending, and normal nodes to build tileable surfaces. It can convert PNG, JPEG, or WebP albedo images into editable base-color, height, normal, roughness, metallic, and ambient-occlusion maps. A live Babylon.js preview displays results on spheres, cubes, planes, or production-style models, with beauty and channel-specific views. Work is supported at 512, 1024, or 2048 pixels while preserving the source aspect ratio. Projects are stored in IndexedDB with recovery, cached generated maps, undo and redo, and keyboard save shortcuts. Exports include separate PNG maps or validated .mmpack packages containing baked maps, the source graph, a manifest, and an export report. The standalone viewer opens packages in browser memory.
For and against
For
- Node-based procedural material authoring
- Converts common albedo images into PBR maps
- Live preview with individual-channel views
- Exports PNG maps and .mmpack packages
- No account system or telemetry
Against
- Windows launcher requires Node.js 22.13 or newer
- Windows also requires .NET 8 Desktop Runtime
- Image-derived metallic maps default to dielectric values
- Maximum working resolution is 2048 pixels
The verdict
Forge Material Studio offers a local workflow covering procedural graphs, image conversion, preview, and packaging. Its open-source licence and absence of accounts support offline-oriented use, subject to the stated Windows requirements.
Who it suits
It suits artists and technical users authoring tileable PBR materials locally on the web or Windows. The MIT licence also permits commercial use when the required notices remain.
