Fontra
What it is
Fontra is a free, open-source font editor built around variable fonts, with a browser interface and cross-platform options. It was initially developed to make designing and producing large CJK fonts more efficient. Fontra Pak runs the software locally for editing computer files, while a server setup can support real-time collaboration among users. Its architecture pairs a JavaScript browser client with a Python server that can run locally or remotely. Fontra can read and write Designspace and UFO files, and read and export TTF and OTF files, including variable fonts. Editing tools include live text entry, designspace axis navigation, live interpolation, OpenType features, outline editing, components, anchors, guidelines, background images, transformations, kerning, font metadata, and variation-axis mapping. Fontra Pak provides desktop binaries for macOS 11 and newer, Windows 10 and newer, and Ubuntu x86_64. Linux users can also use Flatpak or Snap; compiling from source is listed for other architectures such as ARM or PPC. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0 and links to documentation, GitHub, and Discord.
