flowkey suits people learning piano through songs and structured lessons, from beginners to advanced players. It may also suit keyboard owners who can connect using USB MIDI or Bluetooth MIDI.

flowkey is an interactive piano-learning app for people who want to learn through songs as well as structured lessons. It is best suited to solo learners who value flexible practice across skill levels; the main trade-off is that a free account exposes only a small part of the library.

Overview

Founded in Berlin in 2014, flowkey combines a song library with courses in music theory, chords, and sheet-music reading. Its mix of guided study and recognizable pieces is more appealing to learners who want both than to those seeking a course-only approach.

Key features

The library contains thousands of songs across genres and skill levels, arranged by professional pianists. Wait Mode listens as you play and pauses until you find the right notes, letting learners set the pace instead of having to keep up with uninterrupted playback. Video paired with sheet music, reduced-speed playback, section looping, and separate right- and left-hand practice make it easier to isolate and repeat difficult passages.

Step-by-step courses cover theory, chords, and reading sheet music, giving the app a structured learning path beyond its song catalog. flowkey says its material is adapted for beginners through advanced players, though learners should still choose songs and lessons that fit their ability. Connecting a compatible keyboard or piano via USB MIDI or Bluetooth MIDI supports more reliable note recognition. Progress tracking, email support, and in-app chat round out the offering.

Pricing

The Free Account costs nothing and remains available indefinitely, but includes only a few songs and course lessons. It is useful for sampling the approach, not for sustained access to the catalog.

Classic Monthly costs $16.49 a month, while Classic Yearly costs $99.99 a year. Both include all courses, classical pieces, and public-domain songs for one learner; the yearly option costs less over a full year than twelve monthly payments, but commits the full annual charge upfront.

Premium Monthly is $24.99 a month, and Premium Yearly is $149.99 a year. These add pop, rock, jazz, film, TV, and video game music to Classic content, for one user. The yearly plan is paid in full for 12 months and is the lower-cost choice for someone sure they will keep using Premium.

Family Monthly costs $37.49 a month, and Family Yearly costs $224.99 a year. Both include Premium content for up to five user profiles, making them the plans to consider when several people will learn; they cost more than individual access, and the annual option requires upfront payment.

Yearly plans include a free 7-day Premium trial, which converts to a yearly subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before it ends. flowkey also offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. Classic and Family must be purchased through the web app; only Premium is sold through the App Store or Play Store. There is no lifetime plan.

Platforms

flowkey is available on Android, iOS, and the web. That range suits learners who want to use the service across mobile and browser access, while MIDI connection requires a compatible keyboard or piano.

Who it's for

Choose flowkey if you want an interactive piano app that pairs self-paced song practice with lessons in fundamentals, and you are willing to pay for more than a small sample of songs and course content. Classic suits learners focused on classical and public-domain music; Premium is the relevant step up for popular genres, and Family is designed for households with as many as five profiles. It is less compelling if you need broad catalog access at no cost or want a lifetime purchase.

Pros and cons

• Pros: Wait Mode, looping, slower playback, and hand-specific practice support focused work on tricky passages.
• Pros: Courses and a large song library serve learners who want to alternate between fundamentals and playing music.
• Pros: Family plans cover up to five profiles, rather than limiting paid access to one learner.
• Cons: The free account has only a few songs and lessons, so it is a sampler rather than a complete learning option.
• Cons: Popular genres are reserved for Premium, which starts at $24.99 a month.
• Cons: Annual plans charge for the full year upfront and require timely cancellation to avoid conversion after the 7-day trial.

Alternatives

Skoove is worth considering if selected free course lessons are enough to start, or if its $12.49 a month annual-billing Premium option better fits your budget.

Verdict

flowkey is a strong fit for solo piano learners who want to combine self-paced work on songs with structured lessons and practical repetition tools. Its interactive pacing and range of content are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if the free tier must be substantial, popular music must cost less, or an annual commitment is not acceptable.
