Feral GameMode
London, England
What it is
Feral GameMode is a free Linux daemon and library that lets games request temporary adjustments to the host system or game process. Available changes include CPU governor, I/O priority, process niceness, scheduler policy, screensaver inhibition, GPU performance mode, CPU core pinning or parking and custom scripts. Supported games and launchers can activate GameMode automatically; other games can be launched with the gamemoderun command or a Steam launch option. GPU performance mode is supported for NVIDIA and AMD, while GPU overclocking is listed for NVIDIA. The project lists packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Solus, Arch, Gentoo, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Mageia, with possible availability elsewhere. Configuration uses a gamemode.ini file, with documented options for CPU and GPU settings, filters, supervisor access and scripts. Its build depends on Meson, internal communication uses systemd, and development requires a C environment. GameMode cannot automatically integrate hybrid GPU commands such as optirun after a game starts, though a wrapper with gamemoderun is described. The project is maintained by Feral Interactive and uses the BSD 3-Clause License (Revised).
For and against
For
- Free Linux daemon and library.
- Offers multiple CPU and process adjustments.
- GPU performance mode supports NVIDIA and AMD.
- Supported games and launchers can activate it automatically.
Against
- Hybrid GPU commands are not automatically integrated after startup.
- GPU overclocking is listed only for NVIDIA.
- Build depends on Meson and systemd.
The verdict
GameMode provides a range of temporary system adjustments for Linux games. Users should account for its build dependencies and the stated hybrid-graphics limitation.
Who it suits
GameMode is for Linux players whose games or launchers support its requests, or who can start games with its command or a Steam launch option. It may also suit developers configuring custom behavior through gamemode.ini.
