FastBack

What it is

FastBack is a free Minecraft mod for incremental Java world backups: snapshots save changed parts of a world rather than repeating the whole world each time. It can store backups locally or send them to another Git repository or a network drive, including one without a Git server. Automatic backups can run when a world shuts down or after Minecraft autosaves, with a configurable minimum wait between runs. A snapshot can be restored as a separate world copy, leaving the current world files unchanged. Retention choices include daily, fixed-count, GFS, and all snapshots; backups can also include mod jars and configuration files. FastBack works on Minecraft clients and dedicated servers on Linux, Mac, and Windows, with separate Fabric and NeoForge mod files listed. It requires native Git and Git LFS to be installed and available on the Minecraft process PATH. Garbage collection can take more than five minutes, and the documentation recommends running git gc directly for worlds larger than 1 GB. The mod is distributed under GNU Public License version 2, and modpack use requires attribution with a link to its project page.

For and against

For

  • Stores only changed world data in snapshots
  • Can back up locally or to remote destinations
  • Automatic runs can follow shutdowns or autosaves
  • Restores a snapshot as a separate world copy

Against

  • Requires native Git and Git LFS
  • Garbage collection can take over five minutes
  • Modpack use requires attribution and a project link

The verdict

FastBack combines incremental snapshots, automatic backup options, and several retention policies. Plan for its Git and Git LFS requirements, and allow for potentially lengthy garbage collection.

Who it suits

FastBack suits Minecraft Java players and server operators who want incremental backups stored locally or remotely. It requires native Git and Git LFS on the Minecraft process PATH.
