Faker
What it is
Faker is a free Python package for generating fake data for database bootstrapping, XML documents, stress testing, and anonymizing production data. Its built-in providers create values such as names, addresses, and text. The package supports one or multiple locales and falls back to en_US when a localized provider is unavailable. Users can add custom providers, including dynamic providers that read from an external source. A command-line interface offers locale selection, repeated output, file redirection, and custom-provider options. Faker also provides a pytest plugin with a faker fixture, and Factory Boy includes integration through factory.Faker. Seeding can reproduce output for the same methods and Faker version, though dataset updates may change results across patch versions. The unique property can enforce uniqueness for an instance, but may raise UniquenessException if another value cannot be found. Faker supports JSON, CSV, DSV, PSV, TSV, fixed-width, binary, and XML formats, along with API data generation; it does not generate relational data. It is self-hosted, installed with pip, and released under the MIT License. Current versions support Python 3.8 and above; Python 2 users are directed to version 3.0.1.
For and against
For
- Free Python package under the MIT License
- Built-in providers for names, addresses, and text
- Includes a pytest fixture
- Supports multiple locales and custom providers
Against
- Does not generate relational data
- Current versions require Python 3.8 or above
- Unique values can raise UniquenessException
The verdict
Faker offers configurable fake-data generation for Python projects, with command-line, testing, and format support. Check the Python version requirement and whether the lack of relational data fits your task.
Who it suits
Faker suits Python developers who need generated names, addresses, text, or other fake values for tests, bootstrapping, or anonymization. Its lack of relational data generation may matter for projects that require linked datasets.
