Espanso

What it is

Espanso is a free text expansion tool for Windows, macOS and Linux. It watches for configured keywords as they are typed and replaces them with saved text. Reusable templates can cover customer support replies, sales pitches and medical reports; a search panel opened with Alt+Space lets users find and insert snippets.

Snippets can insert dates, including past or future dates, and emoji shortcuts. They can also run shell commands or custom scripts, with forms passing values into scripts. Users can install or create reusable packages through Espanso Hub, which includes a package manager and store. Espanso says it works with most applications and supports app-specific configurations. Settings are managed in YAML files, while a graphical interface is described as planned. Configuration can be synchronized using cloud storage or GitHub; the unmanaged-directory approach is experimental. The software is open-source under the GPL-3 license. It ships with few built-in matches, and some trigger types are not currently supported.
