Django-OCI

What it is

Django-OCI is an open-source Django module for building registries that follow the OpenContainers Distribution Specification. It provides API endpoints for pushing, pulling, and interacting with container images, and can be installed with `pip install django-oci` or from a GitHub checkout. Installation includes Django Rest Framework. The project can run in a local virtual environment or as part of a container-orchestrated registry. Filesystem storage is the default and is intended for smaller registries that do not use an external resource such as cloud storage. Authentication uses a Docker-style OAuth 2.0 flow with username and account-token credentials, plus JWT access tokens. Settings include the URL prefix, specification version, allowed content types, storage backend, session and token expiry, view rate limits, and authentication controls. The project is in early development, and most stated goals remain under development. It has no interface for viewing containers; private repositories and repository ownership or contributors are not yet implemented. The software is free and open source, subject to its project license.

For and against

For

  • Provides endpoints for pushing and pulling images.
  • Can run locally or in an orchestrated registry.
  • Authentication uses OAuth 2.0 and JWT tokens.
  • Configurable storage, expiry, and request limits.

Against

  • No frontend for viewing containers.
  • Private repositories are not implemented.
  • Ownership and contributor features are not implemented.
  • Most stated goals remain under development.

The verdict

Django-OCI supplies registry API endpoints and configurable authentication for Python-based registry projects. Its early development status and missing private-repository and frontend features are important considerations.

Who it suits

Django-OCI suits Python developers building and operating an OCI-compliant container registry. It is most relevant to teams comfortable working with Django and a registry without a built-in viewing interface.
