Ditto
What it is
Ditto is a distributed database and Edge SDK for apps that need devices to keep reading, writing, and sharing data when internet access is unavailable. Its embedded database supports disconnected operation, and devices can synchronize over Bluetooth Low Energy, Peer-to-Peer Wi-Fi, or a Local Area Network without extra network hardware. Devices with the Edge SDK can form wireless mesh networks for real-time sharing in bandwidth-constrained environments. Ditto automatically handles conflicts between peers and with the cloud when a cloud connection is available. The SDK supports iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux, with language options including Swift, Kotlin, JavaScript, C#, C++, Rust, Flutter, and React Native. The Free plan provides 10 cloud device connections, 2GB of storage, and 5GB of data transfer, but includes limited support and no uptime SLA. Pro includes a 99% uptime SLA; Enterprise includes 99.95% and 24x7 support. Ditto describes its Edge SDK for mobile and edge applications that must operate through changing network conditions.
For and against
For
- Devices can read and write while offline.
- Sync works over Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, and LAN.
- Automatically resolves conflicts between peers.
- Supports iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux.
- DPA describes encryption in transit and at rest.
Against
- Free plan has no uptime SLA.
- Free plan limits connections, storage, and data transfer.
- Free plan support is limited.
The verdict
Ditto focuses on local data access and synchronization across devices when connectivity is unreliable.
Who it suits
Ditto may suit developers building mobile or edge applications that must continue operating across devices without reliable network access. Its platform support and deployment options may also be relevant to teams choosing where to run the service.
