Disk Bench
What it is
Disk Bench is a free Windows utility from Nodesoft for measuring disk performance through ordinary file operations instead of synthetic tests. Its Copy File test transfers a file, times the transfer, and removes the destination afterward. Create File writes data built from a repeated 128-byte string, which the maker describes as optimal when one hard disk is present. Because files use the current filesystem, fragmentation can influence results as it does during regular use. Command-line options support copying a source directory and logging the outcome, reading several files in parallel with a selected block size, and creating files in parallel with configurable block sizes and block counts. Read File and Create File automation options were added in version 2.8.0.1. Disk Bench requires Microsoft .NET Framework and has no installation kit. Nodesoft says it tests its programs on Windows 10 and 11.
For and against
For
- Free plan with no charge
- Measures real-world file operations
- Command-line copying and logging
- Parallel read and create benchmarks
- Configurable blocks and block counts
Against
- Windows-only platform
- Requires Microsoft .NET Framework
- No installation kit provided
The verdict
Disk Bench focuses on practical file-based disk measurements and includes command-line automation. Its free Windows availability is straightforward, but setup requires the .NET Framework and lacks an installation kit.
Who it suits
It suits Windows users who want file-operation disk measurements or command-line benchmarks. It is also useful for scripted read, copy, and create tests.
