Conductor
What it is
Conductor is a free, open-source platform for building and orchestrating AI agents and workflows on a durable execution engine. It persists workflow and task state so processes can recover after worker or infrastructure failures, with retries, timeouts, pausing, resuming and termination. Workflow designs can include nested loops, dynamic branches, sub-workflows and thousands of tasks. Native LLM tasks, MCP tool discovery and calls, human approval steps and vector workflows support AI applications. Conductor can connect agents from LangGraph, CrewAI, Google ADK and the OpenAI SDK, and its integrations include event-driven orchestration and Agent2Agent links between independently deployed agents. SDKs are listed for Java, Python, TypeScript, .NET, Go, Ruby and Rust. Apache 2.0 licensing permits self-hosting where Docker runs. Redis is the default storage layer and Elasticsearch handles indexing, with replaceable storage and queue backends. The project offers free self-hosted OSS and hosted Developer Edition plans.
For and against
For
- Apache 2.0 licensed and self-hostable
- Recovery, retries, timeouts and pause controls
- Native LLM and MCP capabilities
- SDKs for eight programming languages
- Free OSS and Developer Edition plans
Against
- Developer-focused rather than no-code
- Self-hosting requires infrastructure where Docker runs
- Redis and Elasticsearch are default dependencies
The verdict
Conductor provides durable execution and AI-specific orchestration features for code-oriented teams. Its free plans and broad SDK support offer flexibility, while deployment and storage choices require technical ownership.
Who it suits
Conductor is designed for developers who write code and build workers and tasks in a preferred language. It suits teams orchestrating durable AI workflows and agents.
