Google Cloud Workflows
What it is
Google Cloud Workflows is a managed platform for orchestrating services in an order you define, including Google Cloud services, custom services, and HTTP APIs. Workflow definitions use YAML or JSON and can include conditions, loops, parallel steps, and reusable subworkflows. Executions can start manually, through client libraries or REST, or on a schedule with Cloud Scheduler. Connectors link workflows with Google Cloud APIs such as Pub/Sub, Firestore, and Secret Manager, while steps can also call custom or private HTTP endpoints. Reliability tools include retries, polling, error handling, callbacks, and waits of up to one year. IAM controls access, Secret Manager can store and retrieve secrets, and Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring provide execution visibility. Pricing is based on executed steps, including failed and retried steps; idle workflows do not accrue charges. The Always Free plan costs nothing and includes 5,000 internal steps and 2,000 external steps. The Pay as you go plan is $0.01 a month per increment of 1,000 steps after the included thresholds, with external steps priced at $0.025 per increment of 1,000.
For and against
For
- Supports YAML and JSON workflow definitions.
- Offers retries, polling, error handling, and callbacks.
- Connectors cover Google Cloud APIs.
- Idle workflows do not accrue charges.
- Includes Always Free usage limits.
Against
- Execution is limited to 100,000 steps.
- Maximum execution duration is one year.
- No visual workflow builder is listed.
- Pricing is based on executed steps.
The verdict
Workflows provides managed orchestration with API connections, execution controls, and monitoring in Google Cloud. Review the step-based pricing and execution limits when estimating whether it fits a workload.
Who it suits
Workflows suits teams coordinating Google Cloud services, APIs, batch jobs, or business and IT processes. It is relevant to users comfortable defining workflows in YAML or JSON and managing access through IAM.
