COLMAP
What it is
COLMAP is a free pipeline for turning ordered or unordered image collections into 3D reconstructions. Its Structure-from-Motion workflow estimates camera poses and sparse 3D structure, while Multi-View Stereo uses PatchMatch stereo and stereo fusion to make dense point clouds and meshes. Users can work through a graphical interface or command line; the GUI's automatic reconstruction tool takes an image folder and produces results in a workspace. Developers can use PyCOLMAP's Python bindings for most functionality or build COLMAP as a library for C++ projects. Feature extraction options include SIFT, ALIKED, and LoMa, with ONNX support required at build time for the latter two. The software supports many camera models and multi-camera rigs. Installation options include pre-built binaries, source builds, a macOS Homebrew formula, and a pre-built Docker image with CUDA support. The library uses the new BSD license, while third-party dependencies have separate licenses. COLMAP is described as research software, and it may exit ungracefully when constraints are not met. Windows binaries are not officially signed and may prompt a Windows Defender warning.
For and against
For
- Free to use
- Graphical and command-line interfaces
- Produces sparse and dense reconstructions
- Python bindings and C++ library options
- Supports multi-camera rigs
Against
- ALIKED and LoMa require ONNX support at build time
- Windows binaries may trigger a Defender warning
- May exit ungracefully when constraints are unmet
The verdict
COLMAP offers a broad reconstruction pipeline with GUI, command-line, and development interfaces. Users should account for build requirements and the project's stated research-software caveat.
Who it suits
COLMAP suits people reconstructing 3D scenes from image collections, including developers who want Python bindings or a C++ library. Its graphical and command-line interfaces support different working styles.
