WebODM
What it is
WebODM turns aerial photos and videos into georeferenced maps, point clouds, digital elevation models, textured 3D models, and Gaussian splats. It runs on a user's computer, including offline, and accepts imagery from any drone, including JPG, TIFF, video files, and multispectral imagery. Export formats include high-resolution GeoTIFF, PNG, LAS/LAZ, OBJ, and OGC 3D Tiles. Mapping tools include measurements, plant-health indexes, ground-control points, elevation contours, rolling-shutter correction, and sharing links.
WebODM runs with ODX, a free, open-source photogrammetry engine, and can connect to processing nodes that use the NodeODX API. Its API uses token authentication, with tokens expiring after six hours by default. Model-level and row-level permissions govern whether users can view, add, edit, or delete objects. The software is free to install and use locally. Optional cloud plans are listed at $24 a month for Starter, $35 a month for Pro, and $99 a month for Business, each billed yearly. Minimum requirements are 8 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space; larger datasets have higher recommended requirements.
For and against
For
- Runs locally, including offline.
- Accepts photos and videos from any drone.
- Exports GeoTIFF, PNG, LAS/LAZ, OBJ, and 3D Tiles.
- Includes ground-control points and elevation contours.
Against
- Minimum requirements include 8 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space.
- Larger datasets have higher recommended requirements.
- Cloud plan prices are billed yearly.
The verdict
WebODM provides a free local workflow for processing aerial imagery and exporting mapping and 3D formats. Review the hardware requirements before working with larger datasets.
Who it suits
WebODM may suit people who need to create mapping and 3D outputs from drone imagery, including when working offline. Its local software is free, while cloud plans are available for users who want those options.
