ClickStack

What it is

ClickStack is an open-source observability stack for OpenTelemetry that brings logs, metrics, traces, session replays, and errors into one system. Its HyperDX interface provides Lucene-style search, SQL access, dashboards, alerts, event deltas, and event patterns. ClickStack uses ClickHouse storage for high-cardinality telemetry, with the site describing sub-second queries even on petabytes of data. Native OpenTelemetry support includes a bundled collector, while non-OTel wide event data can be used when a timestamp is present. Deployment can be self-hosted, hybrid, or cloud-based. Managed ClickStack runs on ClickHouse Cloud with managed operations, scaling, upgrades, backups, reliability, authentication, and user management. The managed service advertises indefinite retention for high-cardinality telemetry and storage pricing below one cent per GB. The ClickStack MCP server connects workflows with tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Slack, Linear, Jira, runbooks, and custom agents. Open-source components use Apache 2.0 or MIT licenses.

For and against

For

  • Unified logs, metrics, traces, and errors
  • Native OpenTelemetry collector
  • Lucene search and SQL access
  • Self-hosted, hybrid, or cloud deployment
  • Managed operations on ClickHouse Cloud

Against

  • Managed features depend on ClickHouse Cloud
  • High-cardinality retention and pricing apply to managed service
  • Requires timestamp for non-OTel wide events

The verdict

ClickStack combines broad observability signals with search, dashboards, and flexible deployment. Choose between open-source deployment and managed operations based on how much infrastructure your team wants to run.

Who it suits

It suits teams collecting OpenTelemetry data across logs, metrics, traces, and related signals. Self-hosted, hybrid, cloud, and managed choices support different deployment preferences.
