CharacterStudio
What it is
CharacterStudio is a free, browser-based toolkit for creating and optimizing 3D VRM avatars. Users can select preloaded traits, use point-and-click controls and a color picker, or drag in their own models and textures. Imported models must be VRM files, with the guide recommending version 0.0. Texture replacement works by dropping an image into the browser, preferably with UVs matching the base mesh. The studio exports GLB and VRM files and screenshots, and it lists programmable animations. A one-click optimizer can merge skinned meshes and atlas textures; documentation says this may reduce an avatar to one draw call. Batch export can randomize results or follow metadata schemas. Avatars can also be generated from manifest.json files. Rendering uses Three.js and WebGL. The codebase is open source under the MIT license. JSON-based assembly and export is documented for batch creation of Anata VRMs, but that workflow is still a work in progress and not yet general-purpose.
For and against
For
- Free browser-based toolkit
- Exports GLB, VRM, and screenshots
- Includes one-click VRM optimization
- Supports batch export schemas
- Open source under the MIT license
Against
- Imported models must use VRM format
- Guide recommends VRM version 0.0
- JSON assembly is still a work in progress
- Default assets require separate installation
The verdict
CharacterStudio provides browser-based avatar building, optimization, and export with an open-source codebase. Its import requirements and unfinished general JSON workflow matter when planning custom or batch production.
Who it suits
CharacterStudio suits artists and developers creating avatars for open-world games or studying and customizing avatar tools. It runs in a browser and supports custom VRM assets.
