CDS (Continuous Delivery Service)
What it is
CDS, or Continuous Delivery Service, is a free, open-source platform for self-hosted continuous delivery and DevOps automation. Its workflows can combine builds, tests, deployments, manual or automatic approval gates, rollbacks, and conditional branches. The web interface creates and runs workflows and displays logs, while the cdsctl command line scripts operations and browses projects and workflows. Project users can manage pipelines and delegate access rights. CDS lists integrations for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gerrit, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Kafka, RabbitMQ, LDAP, OpenID Connect, and Artifactory. Local, LDAP, GitHub, and GitLab authentication backends can be enabled together. Users can create actions, and plugins support custom actions. Workers run with Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, or Windows on 386, amd64, arm, or arm64 architectures. Setup guides cover Docker Compose and binaries. The Docker Compose tutorial warns that its example requires modification before production use.
For and against
For
- Free open-source platform
- Workflow gates and rollbacks
- Web UI and command line
- Broad development integrations
- Multiple worker architectures
Against
- Self-hosted deployment required
- Docker Compose example is not production-ready unchanged
The verdict
CDS offers extensive workflow, integration, authentication, and extensibility options without a license charge. Self-hosting and the stated Docker Compose limitation mean teams must handle deployment and production hardening themselves.
Who it suits
CDS suits teams seeking a free, self-hosted delivery platform with workflow automation and broad integrations. It is aimed at organizations able to host and administer their own instance.
