Bochs
What it is
Bochs is a free, open-source emulator that models IA-32 x86 PC hardware. It can simulate Intel CPU families from 386 through x86-64, along with common I/O devices and a custom BIOS, allowing users to run guest systems such as Linux, DOS, and Windows. Optional command-line and graphical debuggers provide register and memory inspection and breakpoint setting. Graphics support includes VGA, VESA VBE up to 2560x1600x32bpp, Cirrus Logic video, and four 3dfx Voodoo adapter models. Bochs also simulates USB controllers and devices; on several host systems, it can forward guest network packets to a physical network. Multiprocessor simulation can be configured for up to 254 processor threads, but is experimental. The emulator uses a single-threaded simulation core and does not use dynamic code translation or virtualization. It provides virtual hardware rather than an installation wizard or guest operating system media, so users handle guest installation. Some features, including the debugger, may require compiling Bochs from source.
For and against
For
- Supports guest systems including Linux, DOS, and Windows
- Optional command-line and graphical debuggers
- Simulates a range of graphics and USB hardware
- Free and open source
Against
- No setup wizard or guest installation media
- Some features may require compiling from source
- Multiprocessor simulation is experimental
- Uses a single-threaded simulation core
The verdict
Bochs offers a wide range of simulated x86 hardware and optional debugging tools. Users need to install guest systems themselves, and its simulation approach is single-threaded.
Who it suits
Bochs is suited to users who need to emulate x86 hardware for running guest operating systems or examining system behavior with its optional debuggers.
