Bitmovin Encoding
Bitmovin Encoding · San Francisco, USA and Klagenfurt, Austria · founded 2012
What it is
Bitmovin Encoding converts video-on-demand content into streaming outputs, with support for batch conversion, hardware acceleration, and output resolutions up to 8K. Its encoder supports multiple video codecs, including H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9, AV1, and VVC, along with audio formats such as AAC, MP3, Opus, and Dolby audio. Per-Title Encoding analyzes each file to build an adaptive bitrate ladder with configurable bounds and rungs; Per-Shot optimization is also available. Streaming outputs include MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Progressive MP4, and Smooth Streaming, with content protection options including Widevine, PlayReady, Marlin, and FairPlay. The service can run on AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Akamai Connected Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Cloud Connect uses a customer’s cloud resources and requires a commercial agreement and account activation. Pay-as-you-go VOD encoding includes 2,000 free minutes per month, then costs $0.02 per additional minute; rates vary by codec, resolution, and features. Outputs shorter than 10 seconds are billed as 10 seconds.
