BackupPC
What it is
BackupPC is free, open-source software that backs up Linux, Windows, and macOS PCs and laptops to a server’s disk. Identical files across backups are stored once, reducing disk use and disk I/O; optional compression reduces storage further. No client software is required, with SMB, rsync, tar, and FTP methods described. Administrators can review logs, configuration, and status in a web interface. Users can start or cancel backups, browse files, and restore them directly or as ZIP or tar archives. Settings support parallel backups, full and incremental schedules, and system or individual-PC controls. Intermittently connected laptops with dynamic IP addresses are supported, and configurable email reminders can flag missed backups. The project lists support mailing lists and identifies version 4.4.0, released June 20, 2020, as latest. Documentation says it is not for exact failed-disk re-imaging.
For and against
For
- Free and open-source under GPL
- Deduplicates identical files across backups
- No client-side software required
- Supports full and incremental schedules
- Restores directly or as ZIP/tar
Against
- No mobile backup
- Not designed for exact disk re-imaging
- Latest listed release is from 2020
- MD5 collisions remain possible
The verdict
BackupPC provides server-based computer backup with deduplication, compression, scheduling, and web restores. Its free license and clientless setup are useful, but it does not replace exact disk imaging and has an older listed release.
Who it suits
It suits administrators backing up mixed Linux, Windows, and macOS computers to server storage. It also fits users needing browser-based restores without installing client software.
