Azure IPAM

What it is

Azure IPAM helps Azure customers plan, deploy, manage, and monitor IP address space. It discovers networks, subnets, and endpoints across an Azure tenant and can highlight orphaned endpoints and misconfigured virtual network peers. Networks can be organized into Spaces and Blocks, with IP and CIDR consumption tracked and external networks mapped to Azure CIDR ranges. Planning tools help determine how many subnets of a chosen mask fit within a CIDR block. A REST API supports programmatic IP management for infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD workflows, with documented integration paths including ARM and Bicep templates and Terraform. The application can run as a container in Azure App Service or Azure Functions, or as an API without a UI. Supporting infrastructure runs in the customer's Azure tenant, apart from the public container registry. Deployment requires an Azure subscription, subscription-level Owner access, Root Management Group permissions, and Global Administrator consent for app registration permissions. The project is designed for one tenant; multi-tenant support is under assessment. The open-source project is free, but Azure infrastructure and hosting cost extra.

For and against

For

  • Discovers tenant networks, subnets, and endpoints.
  • Tracks IP and CIDR consumption in Spaces and Blocks.
  • Includes subnet planning within CIDR blocks.
  • REST API supports infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD workflows.
  • Can run API-only without a UI.

Against

  • Designed for a single tenant; multi-tenant support is under assessment.
  • Requires subscription-level Owner access and Root Management Group permissions.
  • Azure infrastructure and hosting costs are separate.

The verdict

Azure IPAM combines Azure network discovery, address organization, subnet planning, and API-based automation. Confirm that its single-tenant design and substantial permission prerequisites fit your environment before deployment.

Who it suits

It suits Azure teams that need to inventory and plan address space and automate CIDR reservations in infrastructure workflows. Deployment prerequisites make it a better fit for organizations able to grant the required tenant permissions.
