AWS IoT SiteWise

What it is

AWS IoT SiteWise is a managed service for collecting, storing, organizing, and monitoring industrial equipment data. Asset models arrange information at enterprise, site, area, and machine levels. SiteWise Edge runs on local hardware, collecting and processing data before sending it to AWS Cloud. It supports OPC-UA, MQTT, and partner protocols, with gateway software for Linux or Microsoft Windows Server. Storage includes hot and warm tiers plus a customer-managed cold tier using Amazon S3. Edge can transfer data to Amazon S3, AWS IoT SiteWise, AWS IoT Core, Amazon Timestream, and Amazon Kinesis. The service provides real-time stream processing, custom dashboards, SQL querying, anomaly detection, and machine-learning tools. Internet communication uses TLS, with MQTT or HTTPS to the cloud. The free Data Collection Pack transfers industrial data; the Data Processing Pack costs $200 a month per active gateway.

For and against

For

  • Models assets across enterprise and machine levels
  • Edge supports OPC-UA and MQTT
  • Offers hot, warm, and S3 cold storage
  • Includes dashboards, SQL, and anomaly detection
  • TLS protects internet communication

Against

  • No free plan for the broader service
  • Data Processing Pack costs $200 monthly
  • AWS IoT Greengrass is charged separately
  • Not in scope of AWS compliance programs

The verdict

AWS IoT SiteWise covers industrial data collection from edge gateways through cloud storage and analysis. Its usage-based service and separate gateway-pack pricing require attention when planning deployment.

Who it suits

It suits industrial organizations that need centralized equipment data with local edge collection. Teams using AWS accounts, supported Regions, and Linux or Windows Server gateways can evaluate its deployment options.
