Apache Kafka
What it is
Apache Kafka is a free, open-source distributed event streaming platform for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications. Applications can publish and subscribe to event streams, store them durably, and process them in real time or later. Kafka Streams supports stateful operations, aggregations, windowing, joins, event-time processing, and exactly-once processing. Kafka Connect integrates event sources and sinks, with examples including Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3. The project describes durable, fault-tolerant storage and replication across availability zones, data centers, or regions. Kafka can run on hardware, virtual machines, or containers, on premises or in the cloud, with self-managed or vendor-managed service options. The project describes throughput at network-limited rates, latency as low as 2 ms, and scaling to clusters of up to a thousand brokers. Kafka is available under Apache License 2.0. The Apache Software Foundation does not provide formal or commercial support for its software packages. The quickstart requires Java 17 or later in a local environment.
For and against
For
- Free and open source under Apache License 2.0
- Supports durable event storage and real-time processing
- Kafka Streams includes stateful operations and event-time processing
- Kafka Connect links sources and sinks
Against
- No formal or commercial support from ASF
- Local quickstart requires Java 17 or later
The verdict
Kafka provides event streaming, storage, and processing capabilities with multiple deployment options. Teams should account for the Java quickstart requirement and lack of formal or commercial ASF support.
Who it suits
Kafka suits teams building event-streaming systems for data pipelines, integration, analytics, and related applications. It can be self-managed or used through a vendor-managed service.
