Apache HBase
What it is
Apache HBase is a free, self-hosted distributed data store for random, real-time reads and writes with strict consistency. It runs on Hadoop and HDFS, adding Bigtable-like capabilities such as automatic failover and sharding. The project describes using commodity clusters to host tables with billions of rows and millions of columns. Applications can connect through a Java API or REST and Thrift gateways. HBase is aimed at varied data workloads, including time-series and metrics, IoT telemetry, message and audit logs, ad tech, personalization, security analytics, and genomics research. The project lists version 3.0.0 as a release artifact. Production operators must configure authentication and authorization because neither is enabled by default. Security guidance covers Kerberos, SASL, access control lists, visibility labels, and optional TLS encryption, and recommends keeping services within a trusted network rather than exposing them directly to the public internet. Operating a distributed HBase system calls for systems, software, and networking skills; misconfiguration and hardware problems can affect performance. Commercial technical support is available from Hadoop vendors.
For and against
For
- Strictly consistent random reads and writes.
- Automatic failover and sharding.
- Java API plus REST and Thrift gateways.
- Horizontal scaling across commodity clusters.
Against
- Authentication and authorization are off by default.
- Services should not be exposed directly to the public internet.
- Distributed operation requires systems, software, and networking skills.
- No transaction support is listed.
The verdict
HBase provides a self-hosted distributed store for large workloads that need consistent, real-time access. It requires operational expertise and deliberate security configuration.
Who it suits
HBase suits teams building self-hosted applications that need distributed, real-time reads and writes at large scale. Operators should be prepared to configure security and manage a distributed system.
