Apache Accumulo
What it is
Apache Accumulo is a free, open-source distributed key/value store for storing and retrieving large datasets across a cluster. It uses Apache Hadoop HDFS for storage and Apache ZooKeeper for consensus. Accumulo Iterators can alter key/value pairs at different stages of data management, while a security label on each pair can restrict query results according to user authorizations. Clusters can run with one or more HDFS instances, and nodes can be added or removed as data needs change. The project says its client API follows Long Term Maintenance releases and semantic versioning, and that each release undergoes extensive testing. It is licensed under Apache License, Version 2.0. Available downloads include source and binary archives for 4.0.0-alpha-1, 3.0.0, and 2.1.6; the project identifies 4.0.0-alpha-1 as an alpha release and cautions that alpha and beta releases are not production ready. Users can turn to a mailing list for general questions, and contributors to a separate dev list. An interactive tour introduces the Java API through exercises and is intended for Accumulo 2.1.x or later.
For and against
For
- Distributed storage and retrieval across a cluster.
- Security labels can limit query results.
- Cluster nodes can be added or removed.
- Interactive Java API tour includes exercises.
Against
- The 4.0.0-alpha-1 release is not production ready.
- No free trial is listed.
The verdict
Accumulo combines cluster-based data storage with per-key/value authorization and server-side Iterators. Its listed alpha release is explicitly not production ready, so release maturity matters when choosing a download.
Who it suits
It is suited to teams that need distributed storage and retrieval for large datasets, with per-record query restrictions and the ability to adjust cluster nodes. The project also provides a Java API tour and separate user and developer mailing lists.
