amux

What it is

amux is a terminal multiplexer designed for shared work between people using keybindings and agents using CLI commands in the same panes. Users can create and arrange panes, manage windows, zoom panes, and send keystrokes to multiple panes at once. Its CLI supports structured JSON session capture, blocking waits, and push-based events without a required SDK or language-specific library. Pane history stays on the server and can remain available across detach and reattach, server reload, and crash recovery; the default scrollback is 5,000 lines per pane. A built-in mailbox lets panes exchange, reply to, and acknowledge messages, with recipients checking an inbox rather than receiving messages as terminal input. An optional local MCP server over stdio exposes tools for that mailbox. amux can mirror remote panes and windows over SSH, forwarding input and streaming remote PTY output. The project is free and MIT licensed, with shell script, Homebrew, and go install options.

For and against

For

  • Retains pane history across reloads and recovery
  • Mailbox supports pane-to-pane messages
  • Can mirror remote panes over SSH
  • Free and MIT licensed

Against

  • Does not implement all tmux features
  • First server start requires ncurses tic
  • Default scrollback is 5,000 lines per pane

The verdict

amux combines terminal pane management with CLI-oriented agent workflows, a mailbox, and remote pane mirroring. Users who depend on features such as session groups or advanced hooks may need tmux instead.

Who it suits

amux may suit people coordinating terminal work with agents, especially those using Claude Code or Codex. It is available for Linux and macOS.
