aMule
What it is
aMule is free, GPL-2.0-licensed peer-to-peer file-sharing software for the eD2k and Kademlia networks. It connects to both networks at the same time and works with eMule and other *Mule clients. Search covers eD2k servers and Kademlia, with filters for file type, size, and availability plus AND, OR, and NOT operators. ICH and AICH checks can identify and repair damaged download chunks, while shared files can be re-hashed for integrity checks. Remote operation is available through a native remote GUI, REST API, browser Web UI, command-line tool, and legacy WebUI. The amuled daemon supports headless operation on servers, NAS devices, and VPS instances. Remote connections are encrypted, local-only by default on new installations, and protected by throttled failed logins. aMule also provides IP filtering, secure user identification, proxy support, interface binding, speed limits, and upload controls. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with web and magnet-link support.
For and against
For
- Free GPL-2.0-licensed software
- Search filters and Boolean operators
- ICH and AICH integrity repair
- Multiple remote-control interfaces
- Headless amuled daemon available
Against
- Blocked ports can greatly reduce performance
- Interface binding unavailable on BSD
- Magnet handling limited to eD2k-compatible links
The verdict
aMule combines broad eD2k and Kademlia compatibility with detailed search, integrity checks, and remote administration. Users should account for port forwarding requirements and the BSD interface-binding limitation.
Who it suits
aMule suits users seeking free peer-to-peer transfers across eD2k and Kademlia. It also fits people managing downloads remotely or running a headless server, NAS, or VPS.
