Amazon RDS

Seattle, Washington, United States

What it is

Amazon RDS is a managed relational database service that automates provisioning, patching, backups, and scaling. It supports Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible, Aurora MySQL-Compatible, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, and Db2. Automated backups are enabled by default and permit point-in-time recovery within the configured retention period, which can extend up to 35 days. Multi-AZ deployments synchronously replicate data to standby instances and can fail over automatically; the availability SLA is up to 99.95% for RDS deployments. Read replicas provide asynchronous copies for read-heavy workloads and can be promoted to standalone database instances. Security options include VPC isolation, security groups, IAM permissions, SSL/TLS in transit, and AWS KMS encryption at rest using AES-256. RDS connects with CloudWatch, CloudWatch Logs, CloudTrail, Performance Insights, and Database Activity Streams. Users can manage it through the console, CLI, APIs, SDKs, or CloudFormation. All engines are HIPAA-eligible when used under an executed AWS Business Associate Agreement. A free plan and trial are listed; paid options include on-demand and reserved instances, with separate charges for other components.

  • Offers VPC, IAM, and encryption controls.

Against

  • Some Free Tier features and configurations are excluded.
  • Storage, backup, and I/O may be billed separately.
  • On-demand instances incur compute, storage, backup, and transfer charges.

The verdict

Amazon RDS combines managed database operations with engine choice, backup recovery, and high-availability options. The Free Tier has exclusions, and paid instance choices can involve separate charges for storage, backup, and other usage.

Who it suits

Amazon RDS suits teams that want a managed relational database with multiple engine choices. It also fits workloads that need read replicas, automated backups, or Multi-AZ failover.
